Welcome to The Bear Inn

The Bear Inn is a Grade II listed historic coaching inn, re-built in 1720, located conveniently in Wincanton town centre just a short distance from the A303. We are the best place to enjoy the crackle of a real log fire, a satisfying meal and the company of family and friends. With a large customer car park, the Bear Inn is perfect if you wish to break your journey or visit one of the many local attractions such as Stourhead, Longleat Safari Park or Wincanton Racecourse.

The  Bear is the oldest Inn in Wincanton. Certainly the present building dates from 1720 when it was a coaching inn and mentioned by James Woodforde in his ‘Diary of a Country Parson’ when he visited in 1761.

Jo and Ian Wainwright have been in the trade for over 30 years, 14 of which they have been the proud owners of the Bear Inn. Their pub is now listed as one of the TOP UK 100 pubs by Famous Grouse, as voted by Daily Telegraph readers; a proud accolade indeed.

For fans of Terry Pratchett and his Discworld series, Wincanton is twinned with the fictitious city of Ankh-Morpork and regular events are held throughout the year. For more details visit http://www.discworldemporium.com/

Whatever your taste you are sure to find a drink to enjoy by the fire at brilliantly low prices. We have a fantastic selection of wines to enjoy either by the glass or by the bottle.

In addition, we have a large function hall which is available for Skittles, private parties and events for up to 150 people.

Dining

Soak up the warmest of welcomes and try one of our satisfying dishes, freshly prepared using the finest local and seasonal ingredients. The menu and specials board offer traditional pub fare in addition to more global dishes.

Or maybe sink your teeth into one of our delicious homemade short crust pies, or large Steak and Kidney suet puddings. We are also the proud maker of the unique “Mrs Whitlows Artery Hardening Hogswatch Pies”, from Terry Pratchett’s fictional “Discworld”.

Whatever your taste our menu caters for everyone, all at reasonable prices.

But don’t forget to save room for pudding. Enjoy a range of desserts from the affectionately named “Diet Wreckers” Menu.
